This path from Centre brings you past several outdoor Interpretive Panels that blend with other community landmarks evoking a living history as you progress toward the Memorial Site at picturesque Porter’s Point.
In Memoriam
The Sealers Memorial Statue and Monument commemorates the 251 lives lost in the twin sealing disasters of 1914. In a larger sense, it honours all those who have taken great risks on the sea to support their families and build communities.
The Reuben and Albert John Crewe Statue
Created by acclaimed sculptor Morgan MacDonald, this emotionally charged statue depicts the frozen embrace of Reuben and Albert-John Crewe, a father and son from Elliston who froze on the sea ice in a March 1914 storm while attempting to return to the SS Newfoundland. This remarkable statue symbolizes the great loss all families feel when loved ones do not come Home from The Sea.
The Sealers Monument
On March 31, 1914, 78 sealers from the SS Newfoundland perished on the sea ice in a winter storm. That same storm took 173 lives when the SS. Southern Cross was lost at sea on her return from the Gulf of St. Lawrence hunt. Chiseled in granite, to stand for eternity are the names, ages, and hometowns of the men and boys who died and of those who survived . . . their lives irrevocably changed by this loss.
We remember those who died in the 1914 Newfoundland sealing disasters, as well as the survivors.
