The Facility

With just over 2,000 square feet of space, the John C. Crosbie Sealers Interpretation Centre provides multiple opportunities to gain insights about and reflect on the history of sealing, the daily lives of sealers, their families, and their home communities.

The Museum

Through interpretation, including artifacts, art, and multimedia,  stories of the industry, preparing to go to the ice, the hunt itself, and coming home are all given historical context. You will gain a sense of the anxiety  families would have felt as you progress through these chapters.  And you will experience the sensation of moving up and down on the sea ice.

Home from The Sea

The story of sealing and sealers has many threads. Here, in the first facility of its kind in the world, we have brought these threads together to shape an impactful story of risk, family and community, and personal sacrifice.

Memorial Site

The Sealers Memorial Statue and Monument in Elliston commemorates the 254 lives lost in the twin sealing disasters of 1914. In a larger sense, it honours all those who have taken great risks on the sea to support their families and build communities.
