A CAPTAIN'S LIFE: AT SEA AND AT HOME TRAVELLING EXHIBIT
AN INSPIRATIONAL LIFE
Captain Isaac “Bob” Randall was a legendary sealing captain aboard the “Bellaventure” . . . and so much more. One of three brothers, all of whom became sea captains, his remarkable life as a mariner is curated from archives and artifacts contributed by descendants from across Newfoundland and Labrador. This exhibit explores his journey from the heady days of the wooden schooner trade in the 1890s, through to the emergence of steamships and the dominance of steel hulled vessels of the 1930’s. Interpretive panels and artifacts explore life at sea (including a swashbuckling schooner race), how young men became captains in those times, and family life in coastal communities. Two panels depict the remarkable life of his beloved sister “Aunt Mary,” providing an insightful perspective on the significant role women played in sustaining and building our coastal communities.
